"I'm always standing on the shoulders of the masters—learning their discipline so I can play with freedom and an individual voice."
Born in South Hadley, Massachusetts, in 1968, Joe Farnsworth grew up in a musical family; his father is a music educator, and he has four older brothers, two of whom became professional musicians. He studied with Alan Dawson and Arthur Taylor prior to attending and graduating from William Paterson University in New Jersey in 1994, where he formed lasting musical relationships with Eric Alexander and Harold Mabern. By 1990, he was leading his own weekend residency at Augie's, quickly establishing himself on the New York scene. His recording debut followed in 1991 on Junior Cook's You Leave Me Breathless, alongside early work with Cook, Cecil Payne, Curtis Fuller, and John Jenkins.
After a period with vocalist Jon Hendricks, Farnsworth joined Benny Golson's group, a collaboration that spanned seven years and produced four recordings. That association led to extensive work with Diana Krall, Cedar Walton, George Coleman, Pharoah Sanders, and McCoy Tyner. His career has been defined by long-standing partnerships: decades alongside George Coleman and Harold Mabern, 17 years with Pharoah Sanders, a final tenure as drummer in the McCoy Tyner Quartet, and he is currently a member of the Emmet Cohen Trio.
Farnsworth has appeared on more than 500 recordings. Notable credits include House of Tribes with Wynton Marsalis, Cedar Walton's One Flight Down, and Pharoah Sanders' Creator Has a Master Plan. George Coleman has remarked, as noted in The New York Times, that Farnsworth "had earned a place in the lineage of the many master drummers." As a bandleader, he has released seven albums, including several on Smoke Sessions Records, with his most recent, Big Room(2025), reaching the Top 10 on the jazz charts.
Farnsworth serves as a drum professor at William Paterson University, presents clinics internationally, performs at major jazz festivals worldwide, and is an endorsed artist for Zildjian Cymbals.

TESTIMONIALS
“The interests of music will always prosper in the hands and tutelage of Joe Farnsworth. He has the unique and remarkable ability to lay his talented and obedient drum sticks aside, and mercifully share his intellect and his motivational heart with the awaiting world. This is the way of all geniuses.”
“Over the course of many years within the wide parameters of my extended career as a professional musician and educator, it’s been only upon special occasions that I’ve been prompted to use the word “extraordinary” when describing a musician and his possession of special talent. Joe Farnsworth is one of these. Mr Farnsworth’s ability as a drummer is near to being absolutely perfect, and with a talent like that, one’s ability is not always relegated to one area of expression.”
“I have Joseph Farnsworth on drums, a great person and a great player.”
